The legs are powerful tools that a grappler in any combat sport can and should use to their advantage.

The purpose of The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is to explore and analyze what makes a successful leg-based triangle hold, along with the numerous applications and variations that make triangle holds the most effective submission techniques in any fighting sport.

The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia presents a comprehensive analysis of triangle submission holds and the numerous applications, variations, set ups, and positions from which they are applied. Included throughout are technical tips, and discussions of how to systematically teach and study triangle holds so they become an effective part of your fighting and grappling arsenal.

Contents include

  • Triangle holds starting from the bottom guard position
  • Triangle holds starting from in front of an opponent
  • Triangle holds starting from a top or back ride position
  • Triangle holds starting from a holding or pinning position
  • Prevention, defense, and escapes for triangle holds
  • Over 1000 instructional photographs

A central characteristic of this book is that the skills presented can be used in a variety of fighting and grappling sports.

“As important as the power of the legs may be, knowing how to use that power is even more important — and that’s what this book is about.” —Steve Scott

I first trained with Steve Scott when I was training to win the Missouri State Championships and then the US Junior Nationals, the US Senior Nationals, and the US Open and World Championships. He knows matwork like God knows the Bible. No matter your level of experience, from white belt to white-haired sensei, you'll learn something from this book.

—Dr. AnnMaria Rousey De Mars, World and Pan American Games judo champion, US national judo champion, US Olympic Festival champion, 7th degree black belt

As a combat sports television commentator, I continually find myself going back to my foundation of technical ground fighting and submission holds knowledge, which was originally established by Steve Scott.  It's with great pride that I can claim Steve as both my first coach and my long-time friend.  Quite simply, the man is both a legend and an encyclopedia. This new book vividly illustrates what those of us who are Steve Scott acolytes have long known.

—Sean Wheelock, Television commentator in combat sports, ranging from MMA to Muay Thai

The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is the "Triangle Bible" for all combat sport athletes. Steve Scott has literally written the book(s) on all aspects of judo that can be used in any combat sport, and this book is a quality guide to all aspects of the technique anyone can use and learn from.

The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is a complete guide to the triangle technique. It covers entries [for holds] from every angle, [contains] many photos, and [offers] thorough explanations of every move. It is the perfect guide to apply the triangle from any position or situation you find yourself in during combat sports competition. If you already use this move, you will find the fine-tuning you may be lacking, and the triangle may become your go-to winning technique. A must-have for any combat sport competitor or coach.

Rest assured, many people will find this book a great addition to their library on judo and combat sports.

—Janet Trussell, World and Pan American Games sambo champion, US national judo champion, US Olympic Festival champion, 4th degree black belt

Steve Scott's books have become a staple of my reference library, and The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is no different. Steve has compiled a fantastic volume of techniques that reminds me how much more I still have to learn.

—Stephen Koepfer, head coach of NY Combat Sambo, SAG-AFTRA stunt performer for television and film, four-time Team Combat Wrestling head coach, two-time Team USA Sambo coach, author, martial artist

I have known Steve Scott for over three decades and in that time, he has come to be a very good friend.  I’ve been involved in the martial arts/grappling sports for almost five decades, and Steve is one of the most knowledgeable coaches I have ever met.  His new book, The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is, in my opinion, the preeminent work on the subject. The genius of this book is that it is designed for grapplers of all styles, be it judo, sambo, jujitsu, or submission wrestling.  The techniques are demonstrated with the gi/jacket as well as with no gi. There are clear descriptions and photographs demonstrating the techniques.  Steve demonstrates not only the chokes, strangles, and arm bars from the triangle but also shows various entries to apply these techniques. I would encourage any grappler, regardless of style, who would like to improve their submission game to study this work.

—Gregg Humphreys, judo/sambo coach, Dynamo Combat Club, 5th degree judo black belt, expert sambo in wrestling, 2nd degree black belt in Shingitai jujitsu, North American representative for Igor Kurinnay’s Sambo for Professionals

The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is a great addition to the other books Steve Scott has written. I really enjoyed The Sambo Encyclopedia and The Juji Gatame Encyclopedia and have been looking forward to this book. I often refer to these books while building the curricula for my own students.

This book does a great job detailing the development of the sankaku-jime. I’m a firm believer that understanding the history of the art better enables us to understand the purpose of the techniques we use and allows us to continue to take them even further for the next generation.

The information on the positional categories the triangle can be performed from is great for beginners through advanced practitioners. Also, those of us who are instructors should always be seeking the best approach to teaching techniques. This text gives great details that are easily passed on to our students. The Triangle Hold Encyclopedia is a must-have for your martial arts library regardless of your grappling style.

—Larry W. Keith, professor, sensei, Kodokan judo sandan (3rd degree), Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, author, and video creator; instructing since 1994 and school owner since 2002
