Pushing Hands allows a student to experience the martial art aspects of Taiji training by improving the feeling and understanding of forces, intention and Qi with a partner. Through Pushing Hands the student will achieve deeper relaxation, comprehend the proper leverage, timing, coordination, positioning and Qi communication and make the art of Taijiquan alive and effective.
SEMINAR/WORKSHOP PROGRAM
The Taiji Pushing Hands Seminar is composed of four levels, ranging from basic exercises that helps the beginner understand the concepts of sensing, adhering, following and sticking to advanced levels of Jin training with a partner.LEVEL 1
A participant will learn the keys of listening (skin Qi feeling), following, sticking, adhering, centering, and rooting. Additional topics includes: basic concepts of power emitting, single and double pushing hands routines, and the unique Yang style Taiji symbol sticking hands training. This will build a firm foundation for advanced Taiji Pushing Hands and sparring in the future.
LEVEL 2
After completing the first level of Pushing Hands training, the student will enter the deeper level training, which includes the Peng, Lu, Ji, An routine— both stationary and moving. The martial applications of single and double Pushing Hands will be explained and practiced. Middle level Taiji symbol sticking hands training will also be taught. Finally, higher level power emitting (Fa Jin) training will be discussed and practiced.
LEVEL 3
Topics for the third level includes the training of Da Lu (Large Rollback) - which contains the Cai, Lie, Zhou, and Kao techniques, Taiji Ball training and Middle level Taiji symbol sticking hands training.
LEVEL 4
In this level, the student will learn the most crucial and important Taiji Pushing Hands technique, Control Jin (Na Jin). In addition, the advanced level of Taiji Pushing Hands will be discussed and practiced. The Yin side of Taiji Symbol Sticking Training and Taiji Ball training will be introduced. This level will complete the required basic training techniques of Yang Style Taiji Pushing Hands.
WHO'S TEACHING?
Dr. Yang will be leading the lecture and practice of all the levels of the Pushing Hands Seminar. Master Roger Whidden, a senior student of Dr. Yang for more than 25 years and senior student Leslie Takao will also participate and assist Dr. Yang in teaching.WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This seminar is open to everybody interested in learning or improving their Pushing Hands. It is definitely suitable for practitioners of all Taiji styles.There are no prerequisites to attend. Previous martial arts experience is a plus, but not required. Attendance is limited so register soon. This seminar will benefit:
- All Taiji students who would like to get a deeper understanding and explore training with a partner.
- Taiji students who would like to extend their training into the soft martial side.
- All YMAA students who would like to refine their Pushing Hands techniques.
- All interested in graduating and becoming a Qualified YMAA Instructor of Taijiquan.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
There are no special requirements for the Taiji Pushing Hands Seminar. We recommend that you bring loose practice clothing (t-shirt and pants) and a pair of indoor shoes unless you prefer working in bare feet.TRAVELING TO BOSTON
YMAA Boston is located approximately 20 minutes South of downtown Boston. If you are traveling by car please visit YMAA Boston webpage for detailed driving instructions.Free on-street parking is available and there are several paid lots nearby.
Another good alternative is to use the MBTA subway transportation system. YMAA Boston is about 3 minutes walk from the Forrest Hill Orange line terminal. Visit MBTA website for more information.
If you are flying to Boston, a good way to get to YMAA is to use the MBTA subway system. After arriving to Boston’s Logan Airport take the free airport shuttle bus (Route #22, #33 or #55) to the “Airport” station, then take the inbound Blue line train to “State” station. At “State” station board the Orange line outbound train to “Forrest Hills” station. At the “Forrest Hills” station go upstairs and proceed straight through the exit terminal, once outside and at the top of the landing, turn right proceed downstairs, walk to the intersection, cross the street and walk 2 blocks to YMAA Boston.
