SHAOLIN AND TAIJI QIN NA (CHIN NA)

Effective Locking Techniques for All Martial Styles
Make a Reservation YMAA Boston, Boston, MA - January 19th & 20th, 2008
Qin Na (or Chin Na) means “Seize and Control” and is well known for its effectiveness in controlling and subduing opponents through its techniques of locking joints or muscles/tendons.

Qin Na relies on skill and practice to sense the proper angle, timing, pressure and leverage. Without knowing these key points the techniques will be ineffective. Therefore learning, practicing and feeling the technique under the guidance from an expert like Dr. Yang is essential.

The techniques taught in this Seminar/Workshop can easily be incorporated into other martial styles and systems.

SEMINAR/WORKSHOP PROGRAM

The Shaolin Qin Na program is divided into 6 levels, attending one level per seminar season is strongly recommend. Each level contains more than 15 techniques that require time to practice to make them effective. In the first five levels you will be targeting the fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck and waist area. In level 6, leg Qin Na and applications are discussed, and you will learn and practice counter Qin Na techniques.

The Taiji Qin Na program is divided into 4 different levels. In Taiji Qin Na levels 1 and 2, more than 16 techniques (per level) are taught with the setup of “crossed hands” and resembles the initial scenario of Taiji Pushing Hands (Taiji Tui Shou). Level 3 discusses the “parallel hands” setup while level 4 is focused primarily on elbow sticking techniques (Na).

Shaolin Qin Na and Taiji Qin Na differ in several ways including:
  1. Shaolin Qin Na is harder, while Taiji Qin Na is softer, implying that Shaolin Qin Na uses more muscles while Taiji Qin Na uses more Qi.
  2. Shaolin Qin Na emphasizes both straight and round movements, while Taiji Qin Na is usually more round.
  3. Relatively speaking, Shaolin Qin Na is more offensive and aggressive, while Taiji Qin Na is more defensive and passive.

WHO'S TEACHING?

Dr. Yang will be leading the lecture and practice of all six levels of the Shaolin Qin Na and all four levels of Taiji Qin Na. Senior Qin Na Instructor Jim Noble and Instructor David Grantham will assist the teaching, usually handling the higher levels. Also present will be other instructors and assistant instructors, most notably, Aaron Damus, Ben Warner, and Paul Green who have studied with Dr. Yang for several years.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Everybody is welcome to attend this Qin Na Seminar. Previous martial arts experience is a plus, but not required. Attendance is limited so register soon. This seminar will benefit:
  • Martial artists of all styles who would like to learn and incorporate quick and effective locking techniques into their styles.
  • All interested in graduating and becoming a Qualified YMAA Instructor of Qin Na.
  • All YMAA students (Taiji and Shaolin) who would like to refine their Qin Na techniques.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

There are no special requirements for this seminar. We recommend that you bring loose practice clothing (t-shirt and pants) and a pair of indoor shoes unless you prefer working in bare feet.
